Blue-White Spring Football Game brings game day back to Statesboro

By Katie Tolbert

During the spring, the Georgia Southern University football team practices three times a week for two hours each day. To showcase all this training and development during the spring season, the Eagles scrimmage one another in the Annual Blue-White Spring Game.

On Saturday, April 16, fans were encouraged to come out to Paulson Stadium starting at 10:30 a.m. for the Third Annual Tailgate Kickoff, followed by a Q&A session with new head coach, Tyson Summers in the stands right before kickoff. In addition to all the pregame events, this game marked the first time the Eagles played on the newly laid turf field.

On a fall like Saturday afternoon, it was a perfect time for a football game. Summers said how important a good fan turn out was to him.

“We want to be able to look up and say, ‘Wow, Paulson is ready to go,” Summers said. “When I sit there and talk to our team about what gets you motivated, what gets you fired up about game day, it’s students over and over and over again.”

Even though the upper deck of Paulson was not filled, there was a decent turnout for the game with a mixture of students and fans. The crowd was engaged in the game with chants and cheering for both sides of the ball. After the game, the crowd stayed for the GoDaddy Bowl championship ring ceremony and the player autograph session.

The Eagles have four more practices before spring practice comes to a close and the offseason begins. The next time Paulson Stadium will be filled with fans will not be until Sept. 3, the first home game of the 2016 season.
